Plex Media Server crashes or does not work on QNAP NAS until next restart
New updates are added at the bottom of this story …….
The original story (published December 06, 2021) follows:
If you are someone who stores a lot of media on their devices, you must have heard of the Plex Media Server. Originally released in 2008, the app is developed by Plex Inc. and is available on almost all major platforms available.
Besides sports media server capabilities, the app also allows users to stream over 200 channels for free, with more available in the paid tier.
The app is still under development and is frequently updated, bringing new features and improving existing ones. However, some bugs do appear every now and then, such as the recent issue where Chromecast with Google TV freezes and restarts.
By adding to the list, users are now reporting that Plex Media Server is crashing or not working for them on QNap NAS systems. It’s really frustrating for those who have spent money on dedicated NAS machines.
With reports dating back to early November, many have been angry for more than a month. Many say that restarting the server does the trick for them, but it’s the frequency of the problem that gets them out of whack.
I have the same problem. I just noticed today that Plex Server 1.24.5 is no longer working on my QNAP NAS on firmware v.18.104.22.1688. I stopped and restarted the server, it seemed to hang, but now the activity monitor is refreshing the data, so fingers crossed is unique.
Hi, I don’t want to hijack this conversation, but I just had the same problem in the last couple of days @ChuckPa What logs do you need and how do I get them? It just had a plex server update on Monday PlexMediaServer-22.214.171.12473-8dcc73a59-x86_64 and I’m wondering if that’s part of the problem? AIT
Luckily, a member of the Plex Forum team came out and said they have a potential solution to test in the form of a script file.
A condition was discovered where when PMS crashes on QTS 5.0 the only recourse is to restart QTS (: angry 🙂 I have been working to resolve this issue and have a potential solution. It works well here and I would appreciate feedback from anyone who wants to try it out. It won’t break it. If anything, starting / stopping in App Center will behave as it should in these escalated situations. Volunteers to try out my replacement script ‘plex.sh’?
We hope that Plex developers will soon discover the root cause of the problem. Rest assured, we will update this article when they resolve the crash issue on QNap NAS.
Update 1 (December 16)
1:04 p.m. (IST): A Plex Forum moderator confirmed that the Plex Media Server 126.96.36.19919 is now available for Plex Pass users.
